Last night I was a witness to a hit and run accident on my way home. Here is what happened.
I saw a car swerve to miss a jay-walking pedestrian at an intersection. As the car swerved it hit the side of a parked car with a loud crash. However, a split second later a body went flying through the air, and I realised it had not hit another car at all, but actually a 2nd pedestrian. The pedestrian was thrown about 5-10 metres by the force of the impact. The car hesitated for a moment, and then accelerated away.
There were probably about 20 or 30 people in sight of the accident, and the police and ambulance service were on the scene within 2 minutes. One of the good things about Vancouver is that there are a lot of police in the downtown area. The victim was taken away, and was not looking in good shape. I didn't see any signs of life, but I heard someone say that she was still breathing. The car was going at least 60-70kph at the moment of impact, so you can imagine that it was a pretty violent strike.
I then had to hang around and give a statement to the police, and I said they need to look out for a black sports car, possibly a toyota or honda 2-door. At this stage another woman came over and agreed with my description. Apparently a couple of other witnesses claimed that the car was a silver SUV. I also heard someone else say that it was going about 120kph. The police then had to put out a notice for all officers to be on the lookout for a black sports car OR silver SUV, possibly with damage to the left front indicator. Unfortunately, this appeared to be the only damage to the car, and obviously this is very easily repaired. Could be difficult tracking the car down.
I haven't managed to find anything in the news about it yet, but hopefully the girl is ok and they find the driver.
